EMG Electrodiagnosis
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
  • If radiculopathy suspected, treat symptomatically unless weakness or bowel/bladder¿this situation requires immediate referral to neurosurgery
  • If carpal tunnel is suspected, consider wrist splint that supports wrist in neutral position
  • If patient on anticoagulopathy therapy, please include on script
  • If cardiac pacemaker, cardioverter or defibrillators implanted, please indicate type of device on EMG referral
    Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit If patient on anticoagulopathy therapy, obtain INR 2 to 3 days prior to EMG through U of M lab or have patient hand carry the results to appointment
    Patient Education/Information (includes preps) Advise the patient not to wear hand lotion or other lotions on area to be studied. Have patient remove automotive, industrial grease or agents on skin.
