Foot/Heel Pain
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
  • Consider: stress fracture, plantar fasciitis, chronic tendonitis
  • If diabetic or bilateral symptoms, consider peripheral neuropathy, Charcot arthropathy
  • Evaluate shoe wear
    Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
  • If pain localized to specific site, consider standing x-rays of feet, stress fracture, Charcot changes
  • If pain associated with burning, numbness or tingling, EMG if worsening or motor involvement
  • If neurogenic pain, also consider lab studies including: WESR, CBC, LFTS, creatinine, fasting glucose, Hgb A1C, TSH, T4 , B12, SPEP, UPEP, UFix
  • Consider bone scan if x-ray negative for stress fracture
