Amputation: Management of Lower Extremity (Acquired Adult)
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
  • If limb amputation recommended, request consult with PM&R Amputation/Clinic for counseling and education
  • If limb amputation has been performed and patient is in hospital, consult with PM&R Amputation/Vascular Consult service; if an outpatient consult PM&R Lower Extremity Amputee Clinic
    Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
  • Maintain knee and hip range of motion, especially knee and hip extension
  • If phantom sensation (feeling that the limb is still there but is not painful) is present, assure patient this is normal sensation
  • If phantom pain present, begin gabapentin 100 mg po TID and titrate
  • Begin Physical Therapy for ROM, gait training, transfers and wheelchair use
  • If staples/sutures removed, prescribe "stump shrinker" through Orthotics and Prosthetics
