Treatment for Anxiety AACAP Practice Parameters
First line treatment for childhood anxiety disorders often includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This is available at UM Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and through select clinicians in the Ann Arbor community. Clinicians who are comfortable are encouraged to initiate a trial with an SSRI such as fluoxetine in patients who have clear evidence of anxiety disorders where rapid treatment or significant symptoms persist despite CBT. Patients should be re-assessed within 7-14 days for agitation and suicidality. All should be given contact information for psychiatric emergency services 734-936-5900. PES can assess suicidality after hours and on weekends.
