Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines Treatment for Depressive Disorders AACAP Practice Parameters (volume 46)

Clinicians who are comfortable are encouraged to initiate a trial with an SSRI such as fluoxetine in patients who have clear evidence of unipolar depression or anxiety; in the absence of bipolar symptoms. Patients should be re-assessed within 7-14 days for agitation and suicidality. All should be given contact information for psychiatric emergency services 734-936-5900 in the event of suicidal feelings.
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit Patients are asked to bring along results of neuropsychological testing, school reports and other testing results, or reports from other treating clinicians if they have them. Additionally, patients who have failed 2 independent trials of medication within primary/specialty care, may be referred to treatment resistant depression clinic for children.

Appointment Timeframe Routine 1-4 weeks.
Urgent (recent visit to emergency room/need for hospitalization) within 1 week.
