Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
Referral is indicated if the patient has been detected to have anal sphincter spasm which has not responded to pelvic floor physical therapy or topical treatments. Patients with anorectal disorders, such as fissure of fistula, who have significant anorectal pain often have anal sphincter spasm. Patients with constipation may have a component of anal sphincter spasm.
